My Play “On The Radio” Selected For NAACP Theater Fest

As you know, I have a background in writing screenplays, television scripts, as well as novellas and how-to books. But I found out about a Theater Festival that the NAACP hosts every year and decided to enter. They were seeking short, 10 minute stage plays to run during the festival.

I’ve never written a stage play, but have seen plenty of them. I have, however, written/directed short films. I pulled out a dormant one that I had written several years ago. It’s called “On the Radio.” It’s about a DJ at a Classic Soul Station who also acts as “Dear Abbey” to his callers. One day he receives a call that leaves him speechless.

I took this script and re-wrote as a stage play. Stage plays look very different on page than a short film script. It was invigorating to learn something new and delve into unchartered territory. I’ve always wanted to write a musical/stage play called, “Rapper on the Roof,” (a different take on Fiddler on the Roof); just never did it.

I sent the stage play off in July and yesterday received word that it was one of ten selected to run during the festival! Pretty cool. Unfortunately, the festival is August 24, 25 and they just notified us August 4. So this production has to have a quick turnaround. I’ve already posted ads for actors, will be auditioning them at the end of this week. I guess I also need a Director as I’ve directed short films before, never stage plays.

I’m sure everything will come together as I have a friend who has stepped in to help. I’ll write a follow up post after the festival to share my experience.
