First Rehearsal – ON THE RADIO

Hey everyone,

We had our first stage rehearsal of my play, ON THE RADIO. John Freeland, Jr. is the Director. It has been an amazing experience so far. Within the first 2 hours John took their performances from 0 (actors asked to just read words without emotion) to 200. He is a master. I’ve directed shorts before, but not plays. So I wanted someone experienced. That’s what I got.

He works with the actors in a way that gets them to dig deep into themselves, the characters, allowing them the freedom to discover motivations, backstories and even imagine how the story continues after it has left the page.

I am taking notes, that’s for sure, as this may not be my last play.

Carl Gilliard (seen on many TV shows including 24, movies like Inception, Red Eye, Coach Carter) has that perfect “DJ” voice, calls the role “a dream for any actor.” (No, I didn’t make that up)! He said the dialogue is very natural; how he would speak. He also says he is actually thinking of doing a side project as a DJ who spins music and takes listener calls. Synergy!

Serita Robinson (the young female caller role), also brings her passion and excitement to the role.

So looking forward to what the second rehearsal brings!
