Kansas City's 1931 Kidnapping of Nell Donnelly of the Donnelly Garment Company Fictionalized in Novel and Features Infamous Gangsters and Politicians
"This story is better than fiction! Pour yourself a drink, light up a coffin stick, and curl up with this twisted historical tale. You won't be able to set it down!"

Los Angeles, CA, July 17, 2015 — A riveting new novel from author/screenwriter Patrice Williams Marks, released this month. THE ABDUCTION OF NELLY DON is a fictionalized account of the infamous 1931 kidnapping of Kansas City's millionaire fashion designer Nell Donnelly.
"I am both fascinated and in awe of Nell Donnelly," said Williams Marks. "Nell's story affected me deeply when I stumbled upon it in 2013. I found her to be, not only a woman of exceptional fortitude to survive such an ordeal but also a businesswoman ahead of her time."
Nell Donnelly was a self-made millionaire in the 1930s during the Great Depression. She made her fortune by creating everyday dresses that had a bit of pizazz. At the time, the only dresses available for women were boxy, unflattering dresses for cleaning in, and glamorous dresses for a night out. She tapped into an underserved market and struck gold.
Nelly was also ahead of her time as an employer. She hired over 1000 employees, mostly women. She made sure they were paid above-average wages, had paid leave, paid vacations, paid higher education and paid childcare. In fact, when the unions tried to come in and organized in her factory, they were unsuccessful. The employees had nothing to complain about.
Her abduction came just before the Lindbergh Baby kidnapping, and after several other high-profile crimes.
"Although the story is a fictionalized account of the kidnapping," Williams Marks comments, "I use as characters, the real key players involved, such as crime syndicate bosses Tom Pendergast and Johnny Lazia. Senator James Reed also plays a prominent role in the story, as does her husband Paul Donnelly. You will also recognize locations and street names from Kansas City."
